Meng Announces Winners of District Art Contest

Newtown High School student's winning artwork will be on display in Washington D.C. for a year.

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, D-Flushing, has announced the four winners of her first district art contest for Queens high school students.

The competition was part of “An Artistic Discovery,” a national art contest sponsored each year by the U.S. House of Representatives that showcases the work of high school students from across the nation.

In Meng’s district, first place went to Newtown High School student Lobsang Tsewang, whose work will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington D.C.

Tsewang and his family will also attend the national ceremony for the art contest in June and he will be eligible for a scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.

The competition’s first runner-up was Flushing’s Haini Lin, a student at the Windsor School. Her work will be on display for one year at Meng’s office in Washington.

Newtown High School’s Lhakpa Sherpa was the second runner-up. Her work will be hung for a year in Meng’s future district office in Flushing.

And the third runner-up was Mollie Schindler, a student from St. Francis Preparatory School in Fresh Meadows. Her work will be displayed in Meng’s future office in Kew Gardens or Forest Hills.

Meng recently awarded the winners during a ceremony at the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where the students’ work has been on display since April 14.

“The competition showcased the outstanding artistic talents of our local high school students and I am proud of all the young artists who participated,” Meng said.

A total 66 students from nine schools in Queens submitted entries for the contest. Categories for the competition included paintings, collages, drawings and prints.
