Local Art Students to Exhibit Work in Brooklyn Gallery

The students of Ashcan Studio of Art were one of four groups selected to participate in an exhibit in Brooklyn.

The students at the in Little Neck aren't professional artists, yet. But on Friday night, they'll be getting a taste of the big leagues when they debut their work at the community arts space Arts@Renaissance in Brooklyn.

Around 30 students from 10th grade to college-age will be participating in the show, exhibiting their work in a less than conventional setting: an old hospital that has been converted into a gallery.

The two-month long show will evolve as it goes on, said Monica Carrier, a director at Ashcan. Though initial pieces will be debuted Friday night, the students will also be making "site-specific" work, which will be created especially to suit the gallery itself.

The rest of the show is comprised of professional artists, meaning it's a particular honor that the Ashcan students were selected to participate. In total, the show will feature only four exhibits.

"I think they liked the idea of the kids coming in and giving a fresh perspective on the area," Carrier said.
