LOCAL BEEKEEPER EXPLAINS THE “BUZZ” ABOUT HONEY

LOCAL BEEKEEPER EXPLAINS THE “BUZZ” ABOUT HONEY
Ruth Harrigan and Douglaston resident presents: “Honey, Liquid Gold”
and explains the intricacies of bees and honey making.

On September 18, 2011 at 10 am, the Little Neck Jewish Center at 49-10 Little Neck Parkway will open its doors to the community for a family learning experience as we prepare for a sweet New Year and the observance of Rosh Hashanah.  Ruth Harrigan, a Douglaston resident and local beekeeper, will bring some of her bees for a presentation on the intricacies of how bees live and make honey.  Honey is an important symbol for Rosh Hashanah and embodies our wish for a sweet new year.

On Rosh Hashanah we celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the world. Exploring the origins of honey and the miracle of bees is one way to experience, first hand, the awe-inspiring complexity of our world and to gain an appreciation for the beauty and intricacies of this creation.  Ms. Harrigan’s presentation entitled, “Honey, Liquid Gold” will be followed by an opportunity to taste honey from local beekeepers. Every family will have the opportunity to decorate a beautiful glass honey pot to take home and use in their family’s celebration of Rosh Hashanah.

Ruth Harrigan is a Douglaston resident and will talk about bees, the importance of bees in agriculture such as how more than 70% of the United States food crops depend on bees for pollination, how bees create honey from flower nectar and honey’s unique antioxidant, antibiotic and antiviral capabilities.  Bees are amazing!  Ruth will also be bringing some of her bees to view and an assortment of honey from the New York city area to taste.

All are invited to join us for this fun, informative and exciting New Year’s celebration at Little Neck Jewish Center, 49-10 Little Neck Parkway on Sunday, September 18, 2011, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

A $5.00 per family charge is payable either in advance or at the door.
