Art League Kicks Off Teacher's Exhibition

Douglaston gallery opens new show featuring work of resident instructors.

It's been a busy month at the National Art League.

In addition to the '' exhibit, the league is also hosting a show that displays the work of several instructors who teach at the Douglaston gallery.

"We host this show every year in September. This way our students get an idea of who our instructors are," said Sheila Blunt, curator of the teacher's exhibition.

This fall, the art league will host a variety of workshops and classes, ranging from courses in drawing, painting and mixed media for pupils of all skill levels.

"Coming to the teacher's exhibit and seeing the work on display is a great way for a person thinking about signing up for a class here to see what we're all about and decide which instructor would best fit their goals as an artist," Blunt said.

Currently hanging on the walls in the gallery are works of art that span all forms of media with styles varying from pastel landscapes to acrylic portraits.

Blunt was quick to point out that the work these professors produce is "par excellence."

"We really do have some fabulous artists teaching here. We're very fortunate in that respect," she said.

One such instructor is Shawn Sullivan, who is the newest addition to the art league's ensemble of teachers.

"I'd been coming to the art league for years, originally as a participant, and then one day I did a demo. After that, I pitched the idea of teaching a class and they said 'yes,'" Sullivan said.

Sullivan, who will be teaching a still life oils class for adults, said he looks forward to instructing a classroom full of his peers.

"Right now, I teach high-school art in Rockaway Beach, so I'm looking forward to working with adults for a change," he said.
