Would You Want Your Block To Be A Playstreet?

Play streets are closed to traffic on three consecutive Saturdays.

Get off the road, cars.

The Dept. of Transportation wants civic groups to self-select neighborhood streets to that will host play instead of transit.

Blocks will be cordoned off for people to use the pavement as a play space for three consecutive Saturdays in the summer.

"Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space –our streets," the DOT said in a statement, adding, "Summer Streets provides more space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation."

The event is modeled after similar ones in Bogota, and Paris. It is part bike tour, part walking tour, and part block party, according to DOT.

The temporary zones must have only one-way traffic only, no bus routes or businesses, and not be highly trafficked. No Parking and or traffic will be allowed on the block on the designated Saturdays between 7a.m. and 1p.m.

is accepting requests to establish "Playstreets"  by May 4.
