Both Conrad and Albert were accepted to the academies after U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, nominated them to attend the prestigious institutions. The U.S. Service Academies are four-year post-secondary institutions that combine educational excellence with officer training (for the United States armed forces).

The academies accept students from nominations received by members of Congress from across the nation. Nominated students must meet the highly competitive educational, physical and extracurricular standards set by the individual institutions.
