Whiz Kid: Kaitlyn Coscia

Inspiring "service"

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kids honoree.

Each week, Bayside Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Lori.gross@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information you see below, and a photo. Our next honoree is Kaitlyn Coscia.

·  Name: Kaitlyn Coscia
·  Age: 7
·  Accomplishment: The inspiration for Katie’s Angels, who were co-hosts for “Service Day” at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children
·  Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Katie’s Angels, a group of friends and family who united to support Kaitlyn, her mom Arlene Coscia, and St. John University employee Jo-Ann Morris worked together to create “Service Day,” which took place on Sept. 24 at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. The hosts for the day were St. John’s University volunteers, including Reid Vorbach, an award winning plate twirler, and Dakota and Ray from Brooklyn Soul Train. St. Mary’s Kids, some of the most seriously ill and injured children in the New York region, enjoyed the performances, tried out plate twirling and danced to the vocalists tunes. The group also donated clothing, crocheted blankets, Wii Gaming systems and assorted gifts baskets filled with goodies for all of St. Mary’s Kids.

Kaitlyn was born with a heart defect and suffered from a stroke at only 7 months old. She was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital for Children where she began receiving intensive rehabilitation, critical therapies and early intervention services to help her meet her developmental delays. The staff at St. John’s has been instrumental in helping her overcome her challenges. Today, Kaitlyn lives at home with her family where she continues to excel in meeting her goals through St. Mary’s Home Care Program. She continues to be an inspiration to all.
