Week in Review

It was a busy week for news in northeast Queens.

The Long Island Rail Road announced its new timetables for the coming months and state Sen. Tony Avella blasted the City Council’s land use committee as well as several local elected officials over plans for a new school in Bayside.

And a local jazz musician talked to Patch about her upcoming rock ‘n’ roll camp for area youths.

Monday

A Mercedes driving school that had been located on Bell Boulevard for more than two decades moved, while Tess Morgan replaced FYE at the Bay Terrace shopping center.

Tuesday

The MTA released the new LIRR timetables for the Port Washington line. And Patch spoke with a former Little Neck resident who opened a floor and cabinet renewal business in the community.

Wednesday

Michelle Marie, a jazz guitarist who recently played on BET’s Black Girls Rock awards show, will host a rock camp for local youths starting in January.

Thursday

Avella slammed the City Council’s land use committee, Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, and Councilman-elect Paul Vallone over plans to build a new school in Bayside.

And 10 northeast Queens schools received an 'A' grade, while nine others were given a 'B' and one got a 'C' in the city Department of Education's annual report cards.

Friday

This week’s Queens Eats recipe is baked chicken stuffed with fontina and spinach. And check out this review of “Dallas Buyers Club,” which opened this week at Kew Gardens Cinemas.

An airport advocacy nonprofit has called on the Federal Aviation Administration not to conduct an environmental impact study on the Tennis Climb, which has been driving northeast Queens residents crazy for more than a year.

And a website that ranks walkability and biking for cities across the U.S. released its annual study on the five boroughs. Not surprisingly, northeast Queens did not rank very highly.
