Queens Bird Club to Host Talk on Birds of Israel

Free event will be held at Douglaston's Alley Pond Environmental Center.

The Queens County Bird Club is hosting a presentation on the birds of Israel on Nov. 20.

The event, which will begin at 8 p.m., is being held at Alley Pond Environmental Center, located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston.

Eric Salzman, a composer who is also an active birder and writer on birds and natural history, will talk about how Israel is situated on one of the world’s greatest migration routes.

Raptors, land birds and wetlands species traveling between Africa and Eurasia all pass through Israel, which is the only nation where they are not trapped or shot.

The country also has a large population of wintering birds from the Mediterranean and Middle East, including the world’s largest concentrations of cranes and storks.

There are birding centers on many of the kibbutzim on the Mediterranean.

Salzman was in Israel last spring when wintering birds, migrants and breeders all overlapped.

The free event will also include light refreshments.
