Purim or Queensboro Bridge

March 20, 2011

Happy Purim, Bayside! We hope you do get out and enjoy the day's festivities. Every synagogue in the area—or anywhere—is liable to throw some party, but we've highlighted ' below. Here are your Five Things for the day:

1. "The Queensboro Bridge sums up Queens: hardworking, tough, practical and a little rough around the edges," opined Patricia Dolan, president of the Queens Civic Congress. Dolan was writing to oppose the plan to rename the Queensboro Bridge after former Mayor Ed Koch. Opponents of the notion say the issue isn't personal to Koch, but rather the idea that the name "Queensboro Bridge" pays homage to the people of the borough. A petition is circulating.

2. Chabad of Northeast Queens is having a nearly all-day bash to celebrate Purim today. At 11 a.m. they open their festivities with music, food, a raffle, children in masquerade and the traditional reading of the "Esther" portion of the Bible. At 6p.m., they're having a feast of kosher Chinese food.
