Community Corner

Places To Seder

Celebrate the holiday in your neighborhood

Don’t feel like cooking this Passover? Synagogues and community centers in and around Bayside are hosting synagogue celebrations both before the festival, and the first and second night ceremonial meals, called "seders."  Some are more traditional, some are just for women, but all are likely different than the ones hosted by your own grandmother. You decide which works for you:

Bay Terrace Jewish Center

When: April 5 at 6:15 p.m.

Where: 13-00 209th Street, Bayside
Price: $5

What to expect: Sisterhood Women’s Seder: A cultural take on the Seder from the woman’s perspective, including stories, reading the Haggadah created by the Sisterhood, singing songs and enjoying a bonding experience with other women. Light food to be served based on the Seder Plate.

Chabad of Eastern Queens

Find out what's happening in Bayside-Douglastonwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

When: April 18 at 8 p.m. and April 19 at 8:30 p.m. (first and second nights of Passover)
Where: 211-05 Union Tpke., Hollis Hills
Price: $36 for adults; $15 for children

What to expect: A formal, Hassidic style seder. Chabad seders tend to be different in that the traditional Seder Plate foods vary slightly (like salt-soak potatoes instead of celery). In the Chabad tradition, they also try to avoid getting the  wet, so there's no chance it could expand.

When: April 18 at 8:15 pm (First night of Passover)

Where: Chabad Community Center, 212-12 26th Ave., Bayside
Price: $45 for adults; $22 for children 11 and under

What to expect: A Hassidic style seder, similar to the one Chabad of Eastern Queens will be hosting.

Where: 50-35 Cloverdale Blvd., Oakland Gardens (Bayside)
Price: Lunch and Learn no charge; Women’s Seder is $15 per person; Price still being set for traditional seder.

What to expect: Lunch and Learn with Rabbi Jeffrey Rappaport with theme “G-d said let my people go, so why do I have to slave to get ready for Passover?" Bring your own cold dairy Kosher lunch and they will serve coffee and cake. Women’s seder will serve food and is hosted by the temple Sisterhood.
