Douglaston's Alley Pond Environmental Center hosted its ninth annual Festival of Little Neck Bay on Sept. 28 as part of National Estuaries Day.

An estimated 500 local residents turned out to take part in free boat and canoe rides, games, face painting and crafts.

The event also featured information booths operated by city, state and federal agencies that provided information on the importance of preserving the bay's water quality and wildlife.
