Patch Pets: Puppy Rescue

A 12-week-old mixed breed left for dead seeks happy home full of love

This week's Patch Pet has a particularly sad story.

A Good Samaritan recently brought Vinny, a Pit Bull-Mastiff mix, to North Shore Animal League America after finding him left inside of a trash can, according to shelter manager Anthony Angioletti.

Angioletti said the unidentified woman was walking down the street on March 6 when she happened upon a trash bin filled with the pleading whimper of a frightened puppy, left for dead.

"He was tossed aside like garbage," he said.

The women immediately rushed Vinny to North Shore Animal League, where he was evaluated, diagnosed and treated for Juvenile Cellulitis — an overreaction of the immune system that can be fatal if left untreated.

"Thanks to the nurturing care of North Shore Animal League America and the courageous act of the woman who rescued him, Vinny was brought back to life and healing beautifully," he said.

Juvenile Cellulitis — more commonly known as "Puppy Strangles" — manifests suddenly and is characterized by marked swelling of the muzzle, eyelids and face of a puppy, typically between the ages of 3 weeks and four months old.

And while little is known about the cause of Vinny's disease, one thing about this vivacious pet is certain.

"Vinny's a wonderful, beautiful dog who is ready for a home," Angioletti said.

To adopt Vinny, visit North Shore Animal League America, open daily between 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at their facility located at 25 Davis Ave. in Port Washington.
