Each week, our Parents Council of experts takes your questions, gives advice and shares solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community will have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians, 24-hour pharmacies and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

This week’s question is:

What are some great ways to celebrate Memorial Day with your children? What do you believe is most important to emphasize to them about the holiday?

Memorial Day is a day to honor fallen heroes. The day is also intended to honor those who have given their all in service to our country.

This is why we go to places like veteran’s homes, local retirement homes.

Many of us have family members who are veterans. Do all you can to celebrate with them, not only this weekend, but all year round. Veterans have stories that you will never hear unless you ask. This is a valuable lesson to teach our children.

Here are some ways to connect your child with the meaning of Memorial Day-

  • Plan a trip to see a relative who is a veteran.
  • Bring handmade cards and flags
  • Practice patriotic songs and sing along with them
  • Look up an online company that sends e-cards to soldiers overseas.
  • Plan a great day and attend the largest parade in the country - our own Little Neck-Douglaston Parade. It starts at 2 p.m., so bring your family and lots of water and have fun!
