Update, 3:45 p.m.: An MTA spokesman said that the man killed at the Little Neck Long Island Rail Road station on Thursday may have accidentally fallen into the side of a train as it went through the crossing.
The MTA police are investigating the incident, which resulted in suspension of service on the LIRR's Port Washington branch for 90 minutes.
A man whose named has not been released was killed after being struck by a train at Little Neck’s Long Island Rail Road station Thursday morning, state Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, said.
The man, who was believed to have been in his 70s, was side swiped by a train coming into the station as he crossed the tracks around 10:15 a.m., Avella said.
The man’s name has not been released.
“My deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim of this tragic incident,” the senator said. “Unfortunately, the Little Neck station has posed safety hazards for the community for quite some time. The problem stems from the fact that this station is the only LIRR station on the Port Washington line in Queens that is on ground level.”
