Last Chance: Free Glaucoma Screening

Time always seems to be running out, doesn't it? There's no need to worry. Just drop by Bayside Patch on Tuesdays for weekly reminders of important looming dates and deadlines.

Here are some important ones to keep in mind this week:

Free Glaucoma Screening

Rep. Bob Turner will be holding a no-cost glaucoma screening on Monday, May 21 at the Walgreens parking lot, located at 80-11 Eliot Avenue in Middle Village. The screenings will take place from 10a.m. to 2p.m. No appointment is necessary.

To Learn About The Features Of Your Camera

On May 26, from 9a.m. to 8p.m., JP Teaches Photo and cityHunt will host The Big Picture Photography Education Fair in Times Square.

The event will consist of booths where visitors can learn different concepts of photography, aperture and shutter speed. The event organizers promise that participants will leave the fair with stunning pictures, and a newfound knowledge of their own cameras. The organizers of cityHUNT will also be holding a photographic scavenger hunt in Times Square. Prizes will be raffled off to participants, who much bring their own camera.

On Wednesday, May 16 from 10a.m. to 2p.m. there will be a job fair and conference at the Central Queens Y in Forest Hills. UJA Federation of New York's Connect-to-Care at the Samuel Field Y will be offering a Career Workshop from 10a.m.-11a.m., followed by the Job Fair. A variety of employers and staffing companies will be there, so be sure to bring multiple copies of your resume.

All the performers of the Big Apple Circus will be in Cunningham Park .

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
