Guided by the orthodoxy of city planning, the DEP removed the natural filtration system provided by the unsightly Phragmites and directed outflow to a cleaning facility in College Point.
The ecosystem has not fully recovered. The waters of Little Neck Bay are still brackish, and during low-tide the air is saturated with a foul stench suggestive of a landfill. Just one whiff is enough to bring tears to your eyes.
Conservationists are hoping the new marshland will lend to a speedy recovery of the entire bay area.
On the bright side, some flooding will be reduced in Little Neck and Douglaston.
