Hardware Stores Digging Storm Sales

Where to buy a shovel and salt

The big snowstorm is over and now comes the fun part – the big dig.

There are a handful of local hardware stores ready to provide rock salt, ice melt, shovels and more.

Of course there is mega-store Home Depot (there are two in Flushing, located at 124-04 31st Ave. and 131-35 Avery Ave.), which no doubt have tons of snow blowers, shovels and pounds of salt for your convenience.

One local store open for business until 6 p.m. is Posner Hardware & Lock, located at 47-28 Bell Blvd.

Business on Monday wasn't anything like it was on Sunday, according to Joe, the manager. "We went through tons of ice melt, and maybe 100 – 150 shovels," said Joe, adding that their inventory today is still "pretty good," if there are intrepid individuals out there willing to brave the icy roads.

Parker Hardware, located at 41-25 Bell Blvd. is also open until 6 p.m. Closed for the Christmas holiday, the store reopened on Monday at 7 a.m.

Assistant Manager Louis Ferrone estimates that, as of 2:45 p.m. Monday, 55 people passed through Parker's doors. "We're very busy," he said, noting that the day's hot item is shovels. They've also sold a snow blower and "a few" sweepers.

Ferrone expects that today's hot item will be ice melt, and there's plenty left. "We stocked up on it," Ferrone said, adding that he expects today will be a busy day.
