Great Escape: Joe Michael's Mile

Where to take the most scenic power walk

Bayside’s own backyard boasts a great waterfront jogging/bicycle trail filled with runners, walkers, cyclists and roller bladers. If you need some motivation to start moving and get out there and enjoy it, head for a free Fitness Walk group and participate with like-minded friends. Join in every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. through the end of October and take a walk along Joe Michael’s Mile, the esplanade between Fort Totten and the Bayside Marina.

The fitness walk program begins with a five-minute warm up and ends with a five-minute cool down. It also includes other activities besides walking including arm raises, heel kicks, leg lifts, and other ways to keep fit and tone. All fitness levels are welcomed so no excuses! The walk is led be a volunteer personal trainer from Personal Fitness Consultants, located in the Baybridge Commons shopping strip.

“It’s not just walking,” says Kertty Bolio, owner of Fitness Consultants. “We use all the muscles in the entire body. It’s a fitness walk program and a nice way to get out and do something active.”

Trainers measure where participants start and where they end up in terms of step count so they can see the improvement they’ve made by participating in the fitness walk, adds Bolio.

So jump-start your summer workout regime and take advantage of the great views and beauty of our own neighborhood. Meet at the Fort Totten Front Gate.
