Great Escape: Dancing Under the Stars

An escape for romantic types

Time gets turned back to the 1930s and 1940s every Wednesday night through July 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Little Bay Park roller hockey rink. This is when “Dancing Under the Stars” promises to provide an escape to a gentler, kindler and romantic type of music and dancing. The first 45 minutes features a free ballroom dance lesson, and the rest of the night you can practice your moves. The Dancing Under the Stars Finale on July 27 will feature the live band “One Night Stand”. Professionals Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovskiy may not be around, so you’ll have to bring your own “star” to make it “Dancing With the Stars.”

Get there a little early and warm up with Zumba, sponsored by Personal Best Fitness. No ballroom dancing here, just a nice mix of Latin, Greek, and other ethnic dancing to get the heart pumping. The one-hour free fitness class starts at 5:30 p.m. and is running through June on Wednesday nights.

And once you perfect all your moves, be sure to escape to the sounds of the big band on Sunday June 26 at 6 p.m. at Fort Totten’s lawn overlooking the Long Island Sound. “The Something Special Band” will perform during the Bayside Historical Society’s Annual Lawn Concert. Bring a chair or blanket, food and drink and your dancing shoes to enjoy this free event.
