FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK



Where/When: . On Friday, at 4 p.m.

Why Go:  In this book reading session, teens and pre-teens will be reading to their younger counterparts (kindergarten to 3rd graders).

Pricing: Free



Where/When: . On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Why Go: What kid, and adult for that matter, doesn't like a little arcade fun?

Pricing: Game prices vary


Flushing YMCA

Where/When: 138-46 Northern Boulevard. On Saturday, between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., or on Sunday, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Why Go: This will be a great way to end, or start, the year. Get some family time in with fun recreational activities.

Pricing: Guest passes are $20 for adults, $15 for teens (12 to 17), $10 for kids (11 and younger)



Where/When: 203-20 35th Avenue. Friday evening, or Saturday afternoon.

Why Go: For the selection of more than 50 options of ices, ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt, along with more than 40 options for toppings.

Pricing: Prices vary


 

Where/When: . On Saturday, between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Why Go: So that the entire family can reflect over all that has passed in 2011, before officially ringing in the new year, with a delectable meal from the a la carte menu, along with a champagne toast.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
