FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

 

• WJPS Poetry Slam

Where/When: Barnes & Noble Booksellers . On Friday, at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Ninth grade students of the World Journalism Preparatory School will perform their original works for all that attend.

Pricing: Free


• Night Hike (Light)

Where/When: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, at Mauro Playground. On Saturday, at 5 p.m.

Why Go: The whole family will enjoy experiencing the park and all that's in it with this invigorating hike, led by an Urban Park Ranger.

Pricing: Free

 

•  Wrestling Universe Autograph Signings

Where/When: The Wrestling Universe, 34-29 Francis Lewis Boulevard. On Saturday, for Tommy Dreamer, and Sunday, for The Nasty Boyz, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Fans will meet and get the autographs of wrestlers Tommy Dreamer, or The Nasty Boyz, depending on which date they choose to attend.

Pricing: $25 to see Tommy Dreamer; $40 to see The Nasty Boyz.

 

•  Animal Detectives

Where/When: Alley Pond Environmental Center. On Saturday, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Attendees, ages 3 to 5, will learn about animals that live in Alley Pond Park, along with figuring out which ones have recently been around. The event features live animals and an outdoor walk.

Pricing: Members, $15; Nonmembers, $21

 

Birding: Owls 

Where/When: Alley Pond Park Adventure Center. On Sunday, at 1 p.m. 

Why Go: Finding the owls you're looking for is just have the fun with this outdoor event. With binoculars in hand, you'll be forced to observe all the beauty found in Alley Pond Park.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
