The New York Botanical Garden

February 25, 1:30 p.m.

Ever wondered about the origins of your favorite flavors? The New York Botanical Gardens is inviting families to come and discover the plants behind flavors such as chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. The visit will start in the Lowland Tropical Rain Forest Galleries of the Haupt Conservatory, where attendees will have the chance to learn about the vanilla plant.

Then, venture to the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden’s Discovery Center to explore the seeds and fruit of the cacao tree and cinnamon-flavored treats. Participants will also be able to compare modern day chocolate with an ancient Mayan recipe in a hot chocolate taste test! Finally, predict whether you are served cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate or lemon flavor jelly bean using only your sense of smell.

What's in the Park After Dark?

Fort Totten - 212th Street and Bell Boulevard, Bayside

If you're not afraid of the dark, bring the family down to Fort Totten for a walk through the park in search of nocturnal wildlife. You’ll be amazed to find out what type of creatures come out to play when humans are away.

Young Chefs: Granola, Yogurt and Fruit Parfaits

Alley Pond Environmental Center

Saturday February 26, 10:30am -12:00pm

Ages 7 – 11

FEE: $18 for members, $23 for non-members

Young chefs at Alley Pond Environmental Center will be making homemade maple granola and then will have the opportunity to try their hands at a delicious healthy granola, yogurt and fresh fruit parfait. All materials are included. Limited to eight participants.

Mad Scientists: Owl Pellet Dissections

 Ages 8 - 12

FEE: $15 for members, $19 for non-members

Calling all scientists! Put on your thinking caps and join us as the friendly folks over at Alley Pond answer important environmental questions with fun and easy experiments. Learn about your community's environment through studies and tests. Some can be done with simple household supplies.

Limited to eight participants. Snack included.

27th Puppet State Theatre: The Man Who Planted Trees

Flushing Town Hall

 Ages 8 and up

$6 for Non Member Adults, $3 for Children

Bring your family to this endearing adaptation of Jean Giono’s inspiring short story, which details the impact one man (and his dog!) can make on their environment. This is a multi-sensory theater experience full of unforgettable storytelling and puppetry. The simple tale teaches the lessons of  perseverance, hope and humility. Limited to 25 participants.

Come discover what Fort Totten Park has to offer on a guided scavenger hunt tour through history and nature. Bringing your own snowshoes is recommended as there is limited supply.
