Here is a biking event, bird watching, story time, fort tour, and parade.

 

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

 


Where/When: Kissena Park, Rose Avenue and Oak Avenue. On Saturday, at 10:00 a.m.

Why Go: This bike ride will start in Kissena Park and end at Alley Pond Park, providing families with the physical activity they need!

Where/When: Oakland Lake in Alley Pond Park, on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Why Go: Because Spring is in full swing, as is bird migration. This free bird watching event is hosted by Urban Park Rangers.

Where/When: Flushing Public Library, 41-17 Main Street. On Saturday, at 11:00 a.m.

Why Go: Kids and their parents will enjoy this story time session for children held in the library's Story Room.

Pricing: Free

 


Where/When:  , on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Why Go: This guided tour will take participants throughout the fort, while providing valuable historic information.

Pricing: Free

 


Where/When: On Northern Boulevard, from Jayson Avenue to 245 Street. On Monday, starting at 2:00 p.m.

Why Go: The parade will recognize all those who do and have served in the military, as it has for the past 84 years.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
