FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

 


Where/When: , on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Students will showcase their talents via their original works of art.

Pricing: Free

 


Where/When: Poppenhusen Institute, 114-04 14 Road. On Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m.

Why Go: From pinatas and chinese calligraphy to Aztec Daners and Chinese Ribbon Dancing, kids will not only learn about Mexico and the Asian-Pacific, but enjoy entertaining and engaging performances and tasks as well.

Pricing: Free

 


Where/When: Flushing Public Library, 41-17 Main Street. On Saturday, at 2:00 p.m.

Why Go: The Allegro Singers will perform several renditions of Shakespearean scenes in this opera show.

Pricing: Free

 

Where/When: Alley Pond Park, on Sunday from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Why Go: Along with games and rides for the kids, there will be a microchip clinic and pet adoption services available.

Pricing: Free

 


Where/When: Queens County Farm Museum, on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why Go: Guests will enjoy such attractions as sheep shearing demos, hayrides, a country music band and plants for sale, among others.

Pricing: $5 per person

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
