Where/When: Alley Pond Park. On Saturday, at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. (first come, first serve) Registration begins 30 minutes before the event.

Why Go: This rewarding event is filled with physical, as well as mental, challenges. Let your competitive nature shine.

Where/When: , inside Fort Totten. On Saturday or Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m.

Why Go: So that you can get a visual sense of the changes that have taken place in and throughout Bayside's history.

Pricing: Suggested Donation is $3

3. Okinawa Japanese Restaurant

Where/When: 39-28 Bell Boulevard. On Saturday, until midnight.

Why Go: Along with being able to watch an entertaining show while your food is prepared, you'll enjoy some great food and top shelf liquor. Make it a group outing for a truly memorable experience.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary.

4. K.C.'s Saloon

Where/When: 213-11 41 Avenue. On Friday or Saturday night.

Why Go: It's the perfect setting to share tales of last week's visit from Hurricane Irene. If you haven't much to report, you can take a back seat with something from the fully stocked bar.

Pricing:  Drink prices vary.

Where/When: 41 Avenue and 235 Street. On Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: The market's vendors provide a variety of fresh produce. Be sure to head out early to get first pick of all the delectables.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
