Why Go: Because it's too hot to do it yourself! Welcome the summer by enjoying yourself at the center's annual cookout.

Pricing:  Adults, $10; Kids, ages 3 to 10, $5; Kids under 3, free.

Where/When: . On Friday, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Go: Paintings by Mary Nagin will be on display at this free event.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: 249-11 Northern Boulevard. On Friday and Saturday, until 11:30 p.m.

Why Go: The wine and exquisite Italian cuisine. The seafood, pasta and fish perfectly compliment the assortment of wines.

Pricing:  Food and drink prices vary.

Where/When:  147 Mineola Boulevard. On Friday or Saturday, until 10p.m.

Why Go: Vinoco offers an eclectic blend of fusion cuisine, including Spanish and Greek foods, among others.

Pricing:  Food and drink prices vary, averaging anywhere from $30 to $50 an entree.

Where/When:  40-21 Bell Boulevard. On Friday or Saturday, until 11 p.m.

Why Go: The BBQ meat platters include pulled smoked pork, chopped brisket and/or sliced smoked brisket, to name a few. Rib platters are also available.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary. BBQ meat platters range from $9.95 to $15.95, depending on the number of selections you make.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
