Get Out: Pow Wows and Jazz Legends

Enjoy a great weekend with these fun ideas all near your neighborhood.

This weekend, America is celebrating its heritage and you’re invited!

Starting Friday, don’t be afraid to go native at the 33rd Annual Pow Wow at Queens County Farms. Meanwhile, the “Junta Hispana” Latin American festival at Flushing Meadows Corona Park will be feasting all things south of the border. 

And jazz lovers will swoon over the Swingin’ Ray Abrams Big Band.  They’ll perform some of the classic hits of late great musicians, like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, who inspired contemporary artist Amy Winehouse. Be part of this wonderful tribute to culture and music.

Where/When: Queens County Farm, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park, from Friday until Sunday starting at 6 p.m.
Why Go: Take a trip back in time with our country’s Native Americans and the 40 Indian nations represented at this festival. They will share authentic dances, cultural traditions, jewelry, crafts, food, and fun.
Pricing: Adult $10 (all-weekend pass $15); Children under $5 (all-weekend pass $7).

 
Where/When: Sky View Center shopping mall, 40-24 College Point Blvd., Flushing, on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Why Go: The Swingin’ Ray Abrams Big Band brings back the jazz music of those long lost great jazz artists including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and more. It’s an amazing tribute to the jazz era.

Where/When: Queens Dance Project, 214-26 41st Ave., Bayside, on Friday and daily from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Why Go: Keep your body slim for summertime by trying a trendy new dance class. Whether you choose Zumba, piloxing, or belly dancing, these dance instructors will keep you on your toes. 
Pricing: The first class is free.

SummerStage 2011 Presents: Tunde’s Trumpet 
Where/When: Springfield Park (in the musical theater), 149 Springfield Blvd., Queens, on Friday at 8 p.m.
Why Go: Tunde is a boy who has magical puppet adventures. The show uses puppetry to illustrate how a teenager confronts typical coming-of-age issues to make his parents proud.
Pricing: Free.

Junta Hispana Festival 
Where/When: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Meadow Lake Road, Flushing, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Why Go: Tour Latin America in one an afternoon at this cultural celebration that will include live music, traditional dances, crafts and authentic foods. Stage performances will begin at noon.
