Get Out: Passport to Fun

Enjoy a great weekend with these fun ideas all near your neighborhood.

Ready to travel to a few not-so-faraway exotic places?
Sail away on a fast boat to China at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival races and welcome the Year of the Tiger. Then, takeoff with Dora the Explorer to Treasure Island for a pirate’s adventure in English - and Spanish.

Or, stay close to home with Mets legendary baseball player Darryl Strawberry and his celebrity friends to attend the Douglaston Community Day block party. Your local streets will also be bustling with shoppers at the annual LNJC rummage sale. So leave your luggage home. Just come aboard!

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Where/When: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Grand Central Parkway and Van Wyck Expressway, on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate the Chinese calendar’s Year of the Tiger with a magnificent boat race. Come and cheer on more than 100 teams and 1,000 participants in a glorious boat display on Meadow Lake. Enjoy ethnic foods and cultural performances throughout the day.

Where/When: Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave., Garden City, on Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Why Go: Dora the Explorer and Boots the Monkey come alive and take you on a bilingual journey to Treasure Island for a pirate adventure. You’ll get a chance to help Dora fight the Pirate Piggies. Stay and meet all her friends after the show!

Pricing: Admission is $12; LICM members pay $10.

 

Where/When: Block party on 235th Street and Strawberry’s Sports Grill, 42-15 235th St., Douglaston, on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Why Go: Mets baseball legends like Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden, along with NSYNC pop music singer Joey Fatone, will be among the hosts for this special day filled with fun for the kids and great food. All proceeds will go to the Darryl Strawberry Foundation Against Autism, other local charities and little league organizations.

Pricing: Admission is free.

Get Wet and Wild at Alley Pond 

Where/When: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston, on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Why Go: Take a break from the beach to play on the water table. Kids can touch marine animals, play aquatic games and make an art craft. Recommended for kids ages 5-6. Snacks will be served.
Pricing: Admission is $12; non-members pay $17.

The Annual LNJC Rummage Sale 

Where/When: Little Neck Jewish Center, 49-10 Little Neck Parkway, Little Neck, Sunday and Monday, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Why Go: The LNJC Sisterhood is putting on its biggest fundraiser of the year. Browse through these fabulous finds and tiny treasures as you help support them with your purchases. It’s bargain hunting for a good cause.
