Get Out: Hot Sales and Cool Beach Nights

Venture out for some sidewalk shopping or lounge on the beach with these events near your neighborhood.

The Great Outdoors isn’t just for nature anymore. This weekend, go hunting for sweet sidewalk sales at Great Neck Plaza where you can aim, point and charge your credit card at some amazing finds. Then, time to splurge on a cupcake party with a Little Mermaid theme. Bring your camera - she’ll be there live! And take time to pet some neat reptiles and an alligator named Walley during an “Edventure” at Alley Pond. 

On Sunday night, head out for a virtual a tropical getaway and enjoy the Latin sounds of the boardwalk bandshell at Jones Beach. Sounds muy caliente!

When/Where: Along Bond Street and Grace Avenue, in Great Neck, from Thursday until Sunday.
Why Go: Treat yourself to a four-day weekend of great shopping with the fabulous sidewalk displays of downtown Great Neck. You and your credit card won’t be able to resist the sales!

When/Where: Fort Totten, Weaver Road and Jarman Road, Bayside, on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Why Go: Grab a picnic basket and stretch out on a blanket on Fort Totten Park’s great lawn as the Something Special Big Band jams out some of your favorite classics. 
Pricing: Event is free.

 
When/Where: Cupcake Corner Too!, 62 New Hyde Park Road, Garden City, on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Why Go: Plan to make your own seashell bracelets, play games and have a tasty lunch at the mermaid-themed “Under the Sea” party with the cartoon character Ariel, from the “Little Mermaid” movie. You’ll also get to snap a photo with the Ariel as your keepsake.
Pricing: $39 per child; free for adults.

“Erik’s Reptile Edventure” at Alley Pond
When/Where: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Why Go: This “Edventure” promises more than your typical field trip to the petting zoo. It’s a virtual trek around the world where you’ll get  close-up to toads, turtles, snakes, tree frogs and an American Alligator named Walley.
Pricing: Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for children ages 5 and up.

 
When/Where: Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, on Sunday 7:30 p.m.
Why Go: Unwind to the sounds of Latin music while you stroll the boardwalk at Jones. Head down to field 4 for this summer beach bash every Sunday sponsored by the radio station 105.9 fm.
