Get Out: Hispanic Heritage Month and Fall Fest

Enjoy a great weekend with these fun activities all near your neighborhood.

It’s Hispanic Heritage month until October 15th. So, why not spice up your weekend with some Latin flavor? Take a salsa dance lesson or learn to serve it as dip, compliments of the Children’s Museum. Meanwhile, Douglaston village transforms its quaint streets into an outdoor gallery exhibiting local masterpieces at bargain prices.

Next, it’s a party on Little Neck Bay to honor National Estuaries Day. And finally, attend the movie screening of a local rising star— behind the camera. Independent movie producer, Elana Mugdan, shows us a film about making your own dreams come true. You’ll feel inspired to say – Bravo!

 
Where/When: Along 235th Street across from the Long Island Railroad Station, Douglaston, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Why Go: The home of the National Art League is bound to bring you one-of-a-kind works from local artists including pottery, glasswork, jewelry and more. Children can play with a stilt walker, have their faces painted, or romp inside a bounce house.

Where/When: Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Parkway, Douglaston on Friday at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Support one of Little Neck’s hometown Hollywood hopefuls by attending this no-frills screening. Local independent movie producer Elana Mugdan presents a semi-autobiographical film about making big dreams come true on a shoe-string budget.

Where/When: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Boulevard, Douglaston, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Where would we be without Little Neck Bay? It’s a day for landlubbers to honor every local waterway with a festival that includes interactive games, learning activities and boat rides on our beloved bay.

Pricing: Free entry with general admission

 
Where/When: Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave., Garden City, on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Why Go: Take a lively salsa dance lesson and then learn how make it as a dip during a cooking class. You’ll get a kick out of how many ways it will add flavor to your life.

Where/When: Samuel Field Y, 58-20 Little Neck Parkway, Little Neck, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Why Go: It’s a giant play date for kids and every neighborhood is invited. Come frolic inside the bounce house and try the games. This big block party is also accepting cell phone and food bank donations for SFY social service programs.
