Get Out: Flying Kites and Magic Tricks
We'll help you plan a great weekend with fun activities around your neighborhood.
The big July 4th weekend is almost here. On Friday, start celebrating outdoors by attending a Shabbat service in the park hosted by the LNJC. Such a lovely way to greet the sunset.
Then, find out if “Bessie the Cow” is a puppet hero or a diva. You decide, as she performs some incredible stunts at Totten Park. Also, spend a morning at the LICM learning about kites. You’ll learn to build your own kite and get a chance to fly it afterward. Finally, catch a lively July 4th concert at Steppingstone Park before the big fireworks. It’s sure to be a blast!
When/Where: Lakeville Park, on Pembroke Avenue, Great Neck, on Friday, starts at 6:30 p.m.
Why Go: Pack up your picnic basket and share it with the families of the Little Neck Jewish Center on the park lawn. You'll enjoy the a cappella musical Kabbalat Shabbat in a refreshing outdoor service.
Pricing: Free to attend.
When/Where: Fort Totten Park, at Totten Road and Cross Island Parkway, Bayside, on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Why Go: Meet “Bessie the Cow” and watch her attempt some death-defying feats when she auditions for the circus. Help cheer her on along with all her puppet friends brought to you by the City Parks Foundation.

When/Where: Sky View Center shopping mall, 40-24 College Point Blvd., Flushing, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Why Go: These musical magicians will mesmerize you with their tricks followed by a creative rendition of popular Broadways hits. It’s all compliments of The Queens Center for Performing Arts and the Sunday concert series.

When/Where: Steppingstone Park, 38 Stepping Stone Lane, Great Neck, on Monday 8 p.m.
Why Go: The Band of Long Island will belt out some all-American tunes that will put you in the mood for a great fireworks show.
Pricing: Park admission with park card.

When/Where: Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, on Sunday 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Why Go: Did you know the high-flying kite was once called a wind dancer? Every kid will be surprised to learn the history of the kite, which goes back to China 549 A.D. You’ll also get a chance to fly them!
