Get Out: Bastille Day and Star Gazing

Enjoy a great weekend with these fun activities all close to your neighborhood.

Vive la France! Follow up the Fourth of July celebration with Bastille Day in honor of the French revolution. On Thursday, La Baraka restaurant does it with style, and an amazing fashion show. Next, save a penny, or two, at the giant flea market inside Temple Beth Sholom. And finally, spend a beautiful summer evening gazing at the stars at Alley Pond. You’ll never see the same sky twice.

 
Where/When: The First Presbyterian Church of Whitestone, 15-43 149th Street, Whitestone, on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Why Go: Learn the importance of planning ahead in this economy with some helpful tips from Carrozza, who is a former New York State Assemblywoman. She’ll teach you how to protect your house, home and loved ones for a more secure future. 
Pricing: Free.

 
Where/When: Living Faith Community Church will host the event at Temple Beth Sholom of Flushing, 171-39 Northern Blvd., Flushing, on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: You’ll enjoy bargain hunting for small treasures throughout a lovely maze of antiques and collectibles. The market is hosted by the Living Faith Community Church, which holds it services at the Temple. 
Pricing: Free.

Where/When: The Great Neck Arts Center, 113 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck, on Friday from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
Why Go: Give your child star their first taste of the arts with a class that includes music, literature, drama and more. They will wow you with a special performance at the end. Held every Friday this month.
Pricing: GNAC members $108; nonmembers $120.


Where/When: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston, on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Why Go: Astronomer Mark Freilich will tell you about the constellations and let you view them through a powerful telescope. Get a close-up look at the summer Milky Way sky, the Red Giant Antares, the moon’s face and more.
Pricing: Members $10; nonmembers $12; $7 children ages 7-12.

Where/When: La Baraka restaurant, 255-09 Northern Blvd., Little Neck, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Why Go: Celebrate the beginning of the French revolution with music and a fashion show during a one-time seating filled with French cuisine. Prepare to sing more than one round of the French national anthem “La Marseillaise.”
