Where/When: . On Saturday at 11 a.m.

Why Go: Learn how to be a bowman with the help of Park Rangers. Live out your fantasies of using one of man's earliest weapons or show off your skills if you're a toxophilite!

3. Bareburger

Where/When: At 42-38 Bell Boulevard. On Friday, Saturday or Sunday between noon and 10 p.m.

Why Go: From wild boar and bison to turkey and elk, Bareburger will have you enthralled with the multitude of menu options for its 14 Bareburger options (including veggie). All of the ingredients used are organic, down to the ice cream in that vanilla milkshake you crave.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary. Burgers range from $8.95 to $11.95.

Why Go: Whether you're in the mood for sushi and sashimi or a cooked entree in a Bento Box, Tanko has a number of options to fulfill your appetite.

5. Nature Exploration Hike

Where/When: Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Meet at the Mauro Playground at Park Drive East and 73rd Terrace. On Sunday at 10 a.m.

Why Go: Because this moderate level hiking activity will help to offset some of those cook-out calories you'll be putting on for Labor Day.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
