1. Live Blues Band

Where/When: Papazzio Restaurant. Thursday evening.

Why Go: The Michael Packard Blues Band will be in full swing, celebrating Packard's birthday.

Where/When: At 39-24 Bell Boulevard. Friday or Saturday night.

Why Go: Because after all of the holiday shopping, you need a stiff drink.

3. Horse and Buggy Rides

Where/When: The Bay Terrace. On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: You and the kids will enjoy a free ride, without having to leave the neighborhood. You can also bring your camera for pictures with Santa and his elves.

4. Holiday Nature Crafts

Where/When: Fort Totten Visitor's Center. On Sunday at 1 p.m.

Why Go: This is a great way to celebrate the holidays and create something that will serve as a memento.

5. Christmas Eve Dinner

Where/When: Bourbon Street. Monday evening.

Why Go: Because the seafood options are phenomenal! Plus, you'll need something to sustain you for your late night gift wrapping.

Pricing: Entrees on the Christmas Eve Dinner Menu range from $25.95 to $29.95.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
