1. Happy Hour

Where/When: Plum Restaurant. On Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: Where else are you going to get $5 cocktails, $3 beers and appetizers at half price? And you have the option to stay later for the DJ that arrives at 10 p.m.

Pricing: Free to enter.

2. Bayside Historical Society 12th Annual Art Show Reception

Where/When: Bayside Historical Society. On Sunday at 2 p.m.

Why Go: This opening reception to the art show (running through Jan. 27) will feature awards and live music by Lindsay Megiddo.

Pricing: Free for members; $8 for nonmembers.

3. Safari Beach Club

Where/When: 40-05 Bell Boulevard. On Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Why Go: Whether you're looking for a great place to watch a game or a night out with great music, Safari Beach Club has it all.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary. Print out a coupon if you plan on going during the week.

4. C.J. Sullivan's American Grill

Where/When: 213-10 41st Avenue. On Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Why Go: If you're lucky you'll get to be a Quizzo player, hopefully with a theme that suits you best, featuring specials and prizes.

Pricing: Food and drink prices vary.

5. Winter Specials

Where/When: Uncle Jack's Steakhouse. On Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Why Go: The choices of free range chicken, Black Angus short rib, Kurobuto pork shank and lamb shank are more than you could ask for.

Pricing: Winter Specials entrees range from $28 to $32.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
