Hail and High Water

Following a rain and hail storm, The National Weather Service warns that water-covered roadways can be more dangerous than they look.

Updated on Monday at 6:18p.m.

Areas of the Long Island Expressway between Exits 31 to 35 were covered in 2-3 inches of rainfall on Monday, following an early evening storm that brought down hail the size of golf balls in some areas.

Western Nassau County caught the brunt of the icy downpour, catching hail so large that it was possible to spot the nucleus with the naked eye. Hail was also spotted in Bay Terrace.

The storm left the parking lot of Little Neck Plaza submerged in an area of water that reached above ankle-length at its deepest point.

The NWS warns drivers to never drive through parts of roadway covered in water, saying, “flood water are usually deeper than they appear,” and that just a foot of water is enough to sweep a car off the road.
