Family Talk: Keeping a Schedule

A forum for parents to chime in with their thoughts on weekly parenting topics.

Well summer is almost here. The weather is warmer, to say the least, and the days are longer. And while I love summertime and all of the activities I do with my kids, I'm finding that this past holiday weekend has taken a toll on my family's schedule, as I fear the summer vacation will.

As a parent, I'm sure you'd agree that keeping a regular, daily, schedule is absolutely paramount, not only to the kids' well being and development, but to parents' ability to maintain the household, as well as their sanity!

When it comes to the school week, my husband and I try to keep a consistent schedule, especially with our evening routine, leading up to bedtime.

Lately it seems as though we are spending our weekdays just trying to get back on schedule after a fun-filled weekend. Again, love the weekend activities, but I'm having a little trouble with the kids' inability or unwillingness to snap back into our regular routine.

So, what works best for you when it comes to getting back into, or keeping, your regular routine, especially during holidays, vacations, and more importantly, the summertime?

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
