Bell Boulevard Streetscape Project Likely to Begin Soon

CB 11's chairman said plan to upgrade commercial strip could begin within a few months.

A long-awaited streetscape project for Bayside’s Bell Boulevard could soon be underway, the chairman of Community Board 11 said.

The project will include adding benches along the shopping strip as well as planting new trees, upgrading sidewalks and installing antique lampposts.

The first stage is expected to begin within the next few months, said Jerry Iannece, CB 11’s chairman. It will include new benches along Bell Boulevard between Northern Boulevard and 35th Avenue.

“It’s a great plan and one that most people support,” Iannece said of the streetscape project. “It will make Bell Boulevard a lot friendlier and more conducive to shopping. The design is to make the area more of a village like Great Neck.”

The city’s Department of Construction and Design will undertake the project. But Iannece said the plan has been stalled for some time due to funding and sewer-related issues.

“The city has gotten through a number of hurdles, but now the issue is money,” he said.

Iannece estimated the project to cost a couple million dollars.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
