Bayside Life

A magazine portrays life in the 1930s and 1940s

Magazines are often the best indicators of society’s happenings and history in the making.

The  exhibit, “Bayside Life: On the Edge of Modernity 1939-1941," looks at life during this time period as recorded in the pages of Bayside Life magazine.

Bayside Life was first published in 1939 during a  period of great transitions. It was a time when the Cross Island Parkway, Whitestone Bridge and LaGuardia Airport were opening. It was also the time during the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair and the onset of World War II.

According to Alison McKay, archivist/exhibit coordinator for the , “the magazine promoted a sense of community at a time when so much was going on,” adding, “the neighborhood was booming and being developed and the population doubled. [Bayside] was on the edge of a more modern view, but tried to retain its hometown feel.”

The exhibit features a number of the covers of the magazines, whose inside pages focused on local achievements and  world events.
