Bayside Historical Society Puts Out Call for Art Work for Annual Show

Group will hold a reception for contemporary art show in January as well as a holiday party next month.

The Bayside Historical Society is calling for local artists to submit pieces for the group’s annual contemporary art show in January.

The society, which is located in the castle at Fort Totten, will kick off its art show on Jan. 12 with a reception. The show will run through Jan. 26.

“It’s open to any artist who creates a two-dimensional art work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography or multi media or any sculpture, metal, ceramic or quilt or sewing project,” the society’s Susan Hoyen Chesloff said.

The show, which has been held by the historical society for 13 years, typically includes one to two pieces by an estimated 20 to 30 artists.

But all artists must submit their work for approval by Dec. 20.

Chesloff said the annual art show draws a mix of experienced and novice artists.

“It’s a cultural event we open up to promote local artists and their works,” she said.

There will be wine, cheese and crackers – and possibly entertainment –at the reception, which will begin at noon.

First, second and third place ribbons will be given out to the show’s winners.

The historical society is also a holiday party, which acts as a fundraiser, at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 7.

That event will include a cocktail hour, food, a band and a pianist.

“It’s a big gala event,” Chesloff said. “The castle will be decorated and it will be lots of fun.”

The holiday party will cost $65 for members and $75 for nonmembers.
