Avella Holds Annual 9/11 Motorcade in Northeast Queens
State senator lays wreaths at 25 intersections to honor victims of terrorist attacks.
State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, held his annual motorcade Monday to honor the lives of police officers, firefighters and civilians who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.
This year, the senator laid wreaths and had a moment of silence at 25 intersections named after 9/11 victims in northeast Queens, including the recently added intersection at 204th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside that was renamed in honor of police cadet Salman Hamdani.
"We're honoring people who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11," Avella said. "The victims include people who went to work at the World Trade Center, police officers, firefighters and soldiers who fought in the war in Iraq."
Avella was joined in Whitestone by Jean Prevete, whose son, Pfc. James Prevete, died in the line of duty in Iraq.
The senator made stops in Bayside and Little Neck to pay homage to 9/11 victims, including Firefighter Andrew Christopher Brunn, Glenn J. Travers and Christopher Racaniello.
