Are those real horses?

Bay Terrace Shopping turns festive

Sunday marked the beginning of the seasonal horse and buggy rides in the Bay Terrace Shopping Center.

I'm not sure how many people know about this treat in our own backyard, or that it is absolutely FREE (except optional tip for your driver), but I consider it a family must-do this time of year.

I was literally shocked to see a horse and buggy ride the first time I strolled into the Bay Terrace Shopping Center one December Sunday a few years back.

I thought, 'what a great idea for the family, but it's probably going to cost me $50 or more.' It looked like the ones they have in Central Park, with a live horse driving a six-seat carriage.

Surprise, surprise on me when I found out it was FREE. I ran home and grabbed the girls. They loved it!

This year, you'll find the horse and buggy ride, which will take you around the shopping center, near the Loews Movie Theater on the upper level. They'll be out there for the next two Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Dec. 12 and Dec. 19.

Those who want to avoid the long lines to visit Santa can find the jolly fellow also at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center.

In past years, I've seen very short lines or immediate service for a chat with St. Nick and his elf. You can take a picture and there are giveaways as well.

His workshop this year is near the Terrace Diner on the upper level. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the next two weekends: Dec. 11-12 and Dec. 18-19.
