APEC to Host Delayed Green Gala on April 25

Environmental center's fundraiser was postponed last fall due to the bus strike and Hurricane Sandy.

Alley Pond Environmental Center will host its Green Gala on April 25 after the fundraiser had been cancelled last fall due to a bus strike and Hurricane Sandy. The gala, which is APEC’s largest annual fundraiser, will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Flushing’s Terrace on the Park, which is located at 52-11 111th St. The event, which costs $150 per person, had originally been scheduled for November. Hilda Bloch, APEC’s physical manager, said the postponement of the gala led to some cuts in the center’s programs during the past few months. “It felt like we skipped a year for the gala,” she said. “With the bus strike and the hurricane, we had no income, so the part-time staff didn’t get to work. We’ve been trying to cut down on our expenses.” APEC Executive Director Irene Scheid estimated that the center lost a total $15,000 in funding from a lack of school trips caused by the gala’s delay. Money raised during the gala later this month would immediately go into effect for APEC’s programs. The environmental center is hoping to raise between $50,000 and $55,000, which would all go toward its environmental education programs. The gala will include a cocktail dinner, silent auction and special awards. This year’s honorees include TD Bank, which will receive APEC’s Corporate Friend of the Environment Award, as well as Gerard Guidice, who is the head of U.S. Real Estate, and Daniel Sculley, vice president of Tully Environmental Inc., who will get the Green Leadership Award. Richard Blum, vice president for APEC’s board of directors, will be honored with the Friend of the Environment Award. To register for the event, call 718-229-4000.
