APEC's Green Gala Postponed Until Spring

Environmental center forced to cancel largest fundraiser of the year due to Hurricane Sandy.

Alley Pond Environmental Center is postponing its annual Green Gala fundraiser until the spring in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s recent visit to the five boroughs.

The gala, which had been scheduled for Nov. 28 at Flushing’s Terrace on the Park, will likely be rescheduled for mid-April, said Irene Scheid, APEC’s executive director.

The center was forced to cancel the event due to Hurricane Sandy.

“We still don’t have phone service and we have no fax machines or credit card machines,” she said. “Our honorees are active with the recovery efforts, so they couldn’t focus their attention on this right now, which we understand.”

The event’s cancellation has left APEC in a bind. Scheid said the gala, which typically brings in $50,000, is the center’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“It’s really hit us,” she said. “Plus, we’ve lost our class visits for a couple of weeks. So we’re looking to do another online fundraiser to make up for it.”
