Northeast Queens residents will be able to learn about forests, sample honey and take part in a nature hike this weekend during an event at Douglaston’s Alley Pond Environmental Center.

The event will be sponsored by the United Nations Association and the Auburndale Improvement Association.

“Each year, the United Nations has a different theme for World Environment Day,” said Karen Pierro, who operates Alley Pond’s education programs. “This is the international year of forests. We’ll have organizations keeping with that theme.”

A hike in the forest near the environmental center will begin at 10:30 a.m. Those interested in participating should meet at the back door of the center.

Attendees will be able to check out composting worms from the New York City Compost Project in Queens, while the United States Department of Agriculture will hold a tree climbing presentation.

“They’ll be looking for the Asian long-horned beetle, which is an invasive species,” Pierro said of the tree climbers.

Beekeeper Ross Ber will be on-hand to answer questions and visitors will be able to sample honey. The event will also include an interactive display from the state Department of Conservation on protecting forests.

Children will be able to interact with the animals at Alley Pond’s nature center.

The event will be free-of-charge. For more information, visit the center’s website or call 718-229-4000.
