Alley Pond Park Adventure Course Opens for Season

Northeast Queens adventure course kicks off its seventh season.

Douglaston’s Alley Pond Park Adventure Course kicked off its seventh season this week for the summer.

The course, which is the only one of its kind in the five boroughs, was damaged by fallen trees and downed limbs during Hurricane Sandy in October.

But the course, which is operated by the city's Parks Department, has been fully repaired and is now open for local youths.

“The Alley Pond Park Adventure Course allows park visitors to zip through the tree tops and balance among the branches, all without leaving New York City,” Parks Commissioner Veronica White said. “It is part of a new generation of park designs, where people of all ages can challenge themselves and get fit.”

The course first opened in 2007 through a $250,000 grant from the state office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and a $12,000 grant from the J.E. and Z.B. Butler Foundation.

The site, which is open through November, includes 20 high elements, which are on cables suspended 45 feet in the air, and low elements, which includes cables that are a few feet above the ground.

Some parts of the course are accessible to people with disabilities, while others focus on team-building and problem-solving skills.

Free programs are offered at the course at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Sunday. During July and August, registration to visit the course is required due to increased demand.
