Gas Rationing Officially Ends on Saturday

Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed an order Friday confirming that New York City motorists will no longer have to check the last number in their licensed plates against the calendar day before fueling up as of Saturday.

According to Bloomberg, the odd-even gas rationing system instituted on Nov. 9 following Hurricane Sandy officially expires today as 85 percent of the city’s gas stations are back up to capacity.

“With more than 85 percent of gas stations now operating – a substantial increase from just 25 percent two weeks ago – and Thanksgiving and Black Friday behind us, the odd-even license plate system will be rescinded,” the mayor said.

For the past two weeks, the odd-even license plate system not only significantly reduced extreme lines, but also eased anxiety for hundreds of thousands of drivers across New York City, said Bloomberg.
