Conservation Voters Give Ackerman a 94 Percent on Annual Score Card

Group hands out perfect scores to Schumer and Gillibrand and a failing grade to Turner.

The New York League of Conservation Voters gave perfect scores to New York’s U.S. senators and a high score to U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, in its annual environmental scorecard, but Rep. Bob Turner, R-Forest Hills, did not fare as well.

The group handed out 100 percent scores to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and a 94 percent to Ackerman.

Ackerman, who covers Douglaston, Little Neck and Bayside as well as several other Queens neighborhoods and a swath of Long Island, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Turner, who represents Forest Hills, Brooklyn and a sliver of northeast Queens, received a 0 grade after voting against nine of the league’s targeted bills.

But the congressman was only eligible during the last three-and-a-half months of 2011.

The league weighed 30 bills, which covered everything from votes on global warming and offshore drilling to regulatory rollbacks, in calculating a Congress members’ score.

“New York’s senators had perfect scores and 17 of our House members achieved scores of 90 or above,” said Marcia Bystryn, the league’s president. “Unfortunately, a number of New York delegation members are not heeding their constituents’ calls for environmental progress. We look forward to working with these lower-scoring members to transition our nation to a clean-energy economy and a more sustainable future.”

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned following a sexting scandal, was given an 88 percent grade.

Elsewhere in Queens, Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-Jackson Heights, received a 94 percent, while Reps. Carolyn Maloney, D-Astoria, and Gregory Meeks, D-Jamaica, both received a 97 percent grade.

In Long Island, Rep. Peter King, R-Massapequa Park, received a 14 percent, and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Garden City, was given an 86 percent.
