Alley Pond Park Struck by Apparent Arson

The playground was burned to the ground.

The playground inside Alley Pond Park has been torched in an apparent act of arson.

The recreation area located at the corner of Sprringfield Blvd. and 79th Ave. in Oakland Gardens looks to have been set ablaze overnight, on Tuesday or the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

The playground was closed after the fire, as equipment, an the ground surrounding where it stood, has been scorched, according to Councilman Mark Weprin, D-Oakland Gardens.

The Dept. of Parks and Recreation is investigating.
 
“Anyone who witnessed the action or has relevant information should come forward,” said Mark Weprin. “The children of our community have lost access to a beautiful and safe place to play.”
